The Reception was attended by over 400 people, including Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR C Y Leung, Director of the Central Government Liaison Office in Hong Kong Zhang Xiaoming, Commander of the PLA Garrison in Hong Kong Tan Benhong and Political Commissar Yue Shixin, Chief Justice of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Geoffrey Ma Tao-li, President of the Hong Kong Legislative Council Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, other senior officials of the SAR Government, members of the Executive Council, members of the Legislative Council, Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress, Hong Kong delegates to the CPPCC and other dignitaries from various sectors in Hong Kong.

In his remarks, Commissioner Song reviewed China's economic and diplomatic achievements in the year 2016, the first year of China's 13th Five-Year Plan. He stressed that under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, the Chinese economy adapted to the state of "new normal" and made steady progress in 2016, with further push for the supply-side structural reform. China's diplomatic team has made innovations in both theory and practice. They safeguarded a sound external environment for the growth of the nation despite global turbulences, and elevated the standing and institutional rights of China in international systems. Over the past year, the Commissioner's Office has conducted a great deal of work to bring more benefits to Hong Kong and its residents through diplomacy. The Office has made full use of the diplomatic platforms to facilitate Hong Kong's external exchanges and its participation in the "Belt and Road Initiative". The Office has helped the city improve its global competitiveness and influence and protected the lawful rights and interests of Hong Kong residents overseas.

Commissioner Song noted that the prosperity of the motherland and its generous support to Hong Kong has always been the greatest backing force for Hong Kong's progress. Over the past year, under the leadership of Chief Executive C Y Leung, the SAR Government has faithfully implemented the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law, and made noticeable achievements in developing economy, improving people's livelihood, safeguarding the rule of law, enriching the exchanges between mainland and Hong Kong and expanding Hong Kong's international ties. Right now the city is at the crucial crossroads in its development. It is firmly believed that under the leadership of Chief Executive Leung and with the concerted efforts of all communities in the city, Hong Kong will overcome all types of internal and external challenges and maintain its glamour as the Pearl of the Orient.

Commissioner Song pointed out that the upcoming 2017 will be a year of special significance in China's development. The CPC will convene its 19th National Congress. The 13th Five-Year Plan will be implemented in a comprehensive and deep fashion. And Hong Kong will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its return to the motherland. It requires the concerted efforts of the entire Chinese nation, including Hong Kong compatriots, to achieve the prosperity and stability of the country and harmony and development of Hong Kong.

Commissioner Song expressed hope that the Hong Kong compatriots will continue to uphold the spirit of "loving the motherland and loving Hong Kong", support the SAR Government in law-based administration, openly oppose any words and actions that undermine "one country, two systems", and inject more positive energy into the country's prosperity and stability and Hong Kong's enduring peace and order. The Commissioner's Office will remain firmly committed to implementing the principle of "one country, two systems", give full support to Hong Kong in expanding its external exchanges and cooperation, and do all it can to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of Hong Kong compatriots overseas. Thus, the Office will make its due contribution to the even brighter future of Hong Kong.

The host and the guests to the Reception all enjoyed the warm and friendly atmosphere. They all expressed wishes to a stronger and flourishing motherland and a prosperous and stable Hong Kong SAR.
