Office Spokesperson Addresses Questions from the Press
2017/02/14

Q: Some media in Hong Kong questioned why the Central Government has not submitted Hong Kong's supplementary report under the Convention against Torture to the United Nations. Could you give further details on it?

Spokesperson: The Chinese Government has attached great importance to the protection of human rights, and has faithfully honored the obligations set in the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The Central Government supports the efforts of the HKSAR Government in human rights protection.

In 2016, the Committee against Torture published online the concluding observations on the periodic report by China. Under the spirit of dialogue and cooperation, the Chinese government is studying the recommendations included in the observations and will, in line with the actual situation, provide feedback to the Committee, which will include the contents of the supplementary report submitted by the Hong Kong SAR. The Chinese Central Government has kept effective communication with the Committee.
