Office Spokesperson Addresses Questions from the Press

Question: How would you comment on the recent statements issued by the US and British governments on the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return?

Spokesperson: China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on 1 July 1997, which ushered in a new era of development for Hong Kong as a special administrative region of China.

Over the past 20 years, the Central Government has acted in strict accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law. We have made an all-out effort to support the Hong Kong SAR in developing economy, improving people's livelihood, promoting democracy and ensuring social harmony. The Hong Kong residents enjoy unprecedented rights and freedoms in accordance with the law. Hong Kong has maintained overall prosperity and stability. The principle of "one county, two systems", "Hong Kong people administrating Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy has been faithfully implemented, with its success widely recognized in the world. In future, the Central Government will unswervingly implement the "one country, two systems". Our firm commitment will remain unchanged. At the same time we will work to ensure a full and faithful implementation of the principle in Hong Kong without any distortion, so that it will keep advancing in the right direction. I hope the relevant countries will respect the facts.
