Commissioner Meets New Finnish and Irish CGs

  On 5 October 2018, Commissioner Xie Feng met with Ms. Johanna Karanko and Mr. David Costello, new Consuls General of Finland and Ireland to Hong Kong, and presented them with the Consular Certificate.

  Commissioner Xie welcomed the two consuls general taking up the new post, and briefed them about the success of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the efforts made by the Commissioner's Office to promote the tripartite cooperation involving mainland, Hong Kong and Belt and Road countries. Commissioner Xie encouraged the consuls general to carefully read the important speeches delivered by President Xi Jinping during his inspection tour to Hong Kong last year and the paragraphs relating to Hong Kong and Macao in the report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, so as to gain a full and accurate understanding of the "one country, two systems" principle. He also expressed hope that in Hong Kong they would abide by the international law such as the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and norms on international relations, respect China's sovereignty, security, development interests and territorial integrity, respect the SAR government's law-based administration, refrain from interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and endeavor to promote economic and cultural exchanges between their countries, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. The Commissioner's Office is willing to establish a sound working relationship with the two consuls general and provide necessary assistance and support for their duties.

  The two consuls general thanked the Commissioner for the briefing and commended China's firm commitment and resolve to the "one country, two systems" and to Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability. They would like to make every effort to improve the level of exchanges and cooperation between their country, Hong Kong and the mainland of China. The Irish Consul General expressed his willingness to further promote cooperation and exchanges between Ireland, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, and to contribute to the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Ireland-China diplomatic relations next year. The Finnish Consul General stated that the her consulate is willing to give full play to Finland's advantages in promoting winter sports cooperation between Finland, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, contributing to the success of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. At the same time, it will actively encourage Finnish enterprises to use the advantages provided by "one country, two systems" to expand business in the mainland through Hong Kong.
