2008-11-24

On November 23, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao left Lima for Greece to continue his five-nation tour, after paying a state visit to Peru and attending the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

During his visit to Peru, Hu held talks with his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia. Both sides reached important consensus on developing pragmatic cooperation in all areas and announced that China and Peru concluded their talks on a free trade agreement and upgraded bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.

Hu also met with Peruvian Congress President Javier Velasquez and delivered an important speech in the Peruvian Congress. Both sides signed eleven cooperation documents on economy, technology, health, customs, poverty alleviation, finance, mining and agriculture.

After his visit, Hu attended and addressed the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Lima, where he outlined China's views and proposals on such major topics as the current international economic and financial situation and energy security. He also raised specific initiatives on further pushing forward APEC cooperation in all areas.

Peru is the fourth leg of President Hu’s current visit. Before his trip to Peru, Hu attended a summit of the G20 on the financial markets and world economy in Washington, and visited Costa Rica and Cuba. He will pay a state visit to Greece before returning home.
