Tang Jiaxuan Meets with Felipe González

On January 9, 2012, Comrade Tang Jiaxuan met with former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González at Zhongnanhai. Tang spoke highly of the current relationship between China and Spain and expressed appreciation for the contributions made by Felipe González during his tenure as the prime minister of Spain in pushing forward China-Spain and China-EU relations. The two sides also exchanged views on such issues as the European sovereign debt crisis. Tang said that China believes that Europe has capabilities and ways to overcome the current difficulties. China is willing to stay in solidarity with the EU to overcome these difficulties. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the EU and jointly oppose trade protectionism. Gonzalez said that the fundamental solution to the debt crisis in Europe is to improve the productivity and global competitiveness of Europe. The EU and China should expand mutual investment, strengthen cooperation in infrastructure construction and work together to tackle the crisis.

Felipe González was invited by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
