The Commissioner's Office was established on July 1, 1997, the same day the Hong Kong SAR was founded. Since then, we have forged a close bond and made progress together.
We have shared weal and woe. Over the past 24 years, the Commissioner's Office has staunchly safeguarded national sovereignty, security and development interests. We have firmly fought back external forces attempting to interfere with Hong Kong affairs, undermine Hong Kong's stability, and endanger China's sovereignty and security, and have exposed the ulterior motives of anti-China troublemakers destabilizing Hong Kong during "Occupy Central" and the anti-amendment unrest. With the full implementation of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the improvement of the Hong Kong SAR's electoral system, and efforts to bring Covid-19 gradually under control, the Hong Kong SAR enjoys an unprecedentedly sound environment, and the "Pearl of the Orient" is shining ever brighter.
We have stood shoulder to shoulder. Over the 24 years, the Commissioner's Office has shared the success stories of "One Country, Two Systems" and the Hong Kong SAR, and supported the SAR in increasing exchanges with the rest of the world and enhancing its international stature and competitiveness. We have fully mobilized diplomatic resources to create an enabling external environment for the enduring success of "One Country, Two Systems", and encouraged international institutions in Hong Kong to focus on win-win cooperation and play a constructive role in the city's prosperity and development. Having emerged stronger from the challenges over the 24 years, Hong Kong has grown into a more important international financial, shipping and trading center than ever.
We have worked hand in hand. The Commissioner's Office has resolutely protected Hong Kong compatriot's lawful rights and interests overseas. China's consular protection goes wherever our Hong Kong compatriots are. Also, we have encouraged Hong Kong compatriots to learn more about and participate more in diplomatic work by hosting brand events such as "Diplomacy on Campus" seminars, the Diplomatic Knowledge Contest and the "Friends of Diplomacy" Summer Camp. China's diplomacy has never been so closely connected with Hong Kong people's interests. A prosperous and strong motherland provides the most solid backing for every Hong Kong compatriot and for the development of Hong Kong as a whole.
The year of 2021 marks the centenary of the Communist Party of China and also the first year of the new journey towards fully building a modern socialist country. In this new era of continuous endeavors, the Commissioner's Office remains committed to upholding "One Country, Two Systems" and the long-term stability of the Hong Kong SAR, to facilitating exchanges and cooperation in various areas between the SAR and the rest of the world, and to putting people at the center of our work. We will continue to contribute to the country and serve the Hong Kong SAR, and jointly write a new chapter of the Hong Kong miracle below the Lion Rock.
